Chip vs. Crack: When Can a Windshield Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?
Not every windshield needs replacing. Here are the size, location, and timing rules that decide whether a quick resin repair will do the job.
A rock chip doesn’t automatically mean a new windshield. In a lot of cases, a fast, low-cost resin repair is all you need, if you catch it in time. Here’s how the decision is actually made.
When a repair will work
A chip or crack is usually repairable when:
- The chip is smaller than a toonie (about an inch across).
- Any crack is shorter than roughly three inches.
- The damage is not directly in the driver’s line of sight.
- It hasn’t been contaminated by dirt, water, or a car wash for too long.
A repair injects optical-grade resin into the damage and cures it with UV light, restoring strength and stopping the spread. It takes about 30 minutes, and with comprehensive coverage it’s often free.
When you need a replacement
Replacement is the safe call when:
- The crack is long (past about three inches and growing).
- The damage sits right in the driver’s view, where even a faint repair mark is a distraction.
- There are multiple cracks, or the damage reaches the edge of the glass (which weakens the whole panel).
- The inner layer of glass is broken, not just the outer.
Why timing is everything
This is the part Ontario drivers underestimate. A small, repairable chip can become an unrepairable crack overnight, all it takes is a temperature swing (hello, Southwestern Ontario winters), a pothole, or a door slam. Heat makes glass expand; cold makes it contract; the chip is the weak point that gives.
The rule of thumb: fix it this week, not next month.
Will the repair be invisible?
It’ll improve a lot, usually 80-90% less visible, but a faint mark can remain. The goal of a repair isn’t cosmetic perfection; it’s strength and stopping the spread. If you want flawless optics, that’s a replacement conversation.
