In detail

Windshield Replacement, the deeper look

Windshield replacement is the procedure for removing a damaged auto windshield and installing a new one, bonded to the vehicle’s frame with automotive-grade urethane and with any forward-facing ADAS cameras recalibrated to factory specification.

When replacement is the right call, not repair

Not every damaged windshield needs to come out. The line between repair and replacement is usually drawn at three thresholds: damage longer than about six inches, damage in the driver’s primary sight line, or damage that’s gone through both layers of the laminated glass. Anything past those thresholds is a replacement job, because resin repair can no longer guarantee the structural integrity of the windshield in a collision. Our chip vs crack guide covers the decision tree in detail; the short version is that fresh chips smaller than a loonie are almost always repairable, while spreading cracks usually aren’t.

OEM-equivalent glass, premium urethane, and why both matter

Cheap windshields and cheap urethane are the two corners most shops cut when they quote rock-bottom prices. We don’t. The glass we install is OEM-equivalent, meaning it’s manufactured to the same DOT specification as the original glass that came with your vehicle, same thickness, same optical clarity, same acoustic and solar properties. The urethane is automotive-grade, meeting the FMVSS 212 safety standard, which is what actually keeps the windshield in place during a frontal collision or rollover. (A windshield holds approximately 30% of the structural strength of your vehicle’s roof. The urethane is what makes that work.)

ADAS calibration, on-site, same visit

If your vehicle was built in roughly the last six years, there’s a forward-facing camera mounted to the top of the windshield that runs lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, automatic emergency braking, and forward-collision warning. Moving the windshield moves that camera by fractions of a millimetre, which is enough to throw its aim off by metres at highway distance. Manufacturers require recalibration. We bring the static-calibration target boards and the diagnostic tools to your driveway, so the calibration happens at the same visit. No second trip to the dealership, no surprise bill. See why your new windshield needs ADAS calibration and ADAS calibration cost in Ontario for the full breakdown.

Safe drive-away time

Urethane needs time to cure before the windshield is structurally bonded. The minimum safe drive-away time (SDAT) depends on the urethane formula and the ambient temperature. We use a fast-cure urethane that’s safe at 30 to 60 minutes in normal Ontario conditions. We don’t leave until the vehicle hits its SDAT spec, and we’ll tell you exactly what that spec is for your vehicle. Cutting SDAT short risks the windshield shifting before the bond sets. What “safe drive-away time” means goes deeper.

What you pay in Ontario

If your auto policy includes comprehensive coverage (most do), windshield replacement and the ADAS calibration that goes with it are both covered. A single glass claim does not normally raise your premium in Ontario. Our comprehensive vs collision guide explains the coverage split. We cover up to 100% of your deductible, so for most drivers in London and Southwestern Ontario, a replacement that would otherwise run $500 to $1,500 ends up at zero out of pocket. We file the claim end-to-end so you’re not on hold with the insurer.

Lifetime workmanship warranty

Every replacement comes with a written lifetime workmanship warranty against leaks, wind noise, and defects for as long as you own the vehicle. If anything’s wrong, we come back and fix it.

Good to know

Windshield Replacement, FAQ

How long does a windshield replacement take?

A standard replacement takes 60-90 minutes. We then ask you to wait a short "safe drive-away" period (about an hour) so the urethane adhesive cures and the bond is fully safe.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket glass?

We use OEM-equivalent (OEE) glass that matches the original for fit, clarity, and safety-system compatibility, with OEM available on request.

Can I wash my car afterward?

Skip high-pressure car washes for 24 hours. Normal rain right after the safe drive-away time is completely fine.
