Why Your New Windshield Needs ADAS Calibration

If your vehicle is from roughly the last decade, your windshield is more than glass, it’s a mounting point for the forward-facing camera that runs your safety systems. Replace the glass, and that camera has to be recalibrated. Here’s what that means and why we never skip it.

What ADAS actually is

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, the features that watch the road for you:

• Lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist
• Automatic emergency braking (AEB)
• Adaptive cruise control
• Forward-collision warning

Most of these rely on a camera mounted at the top of the windshield, looking out through the glass.

Why replacement throws it off

When we remove your old windshield and set a new one, the camera’s position shifts, even by a fraction of a millimetre. That sounds trivial, but the camera is aiming hundreds of metres down the road. A tiny angular error at the glass becomes metres of error at highway distance. A system that’s a hair off might brake late, read the wrong lane, or misjudge the car ahead.

Static, dynamic, or both

Calibration restores the camera’s aim to factory spec. Depending on your make and model, that’s:

• Static calibration, precision target boards set up at exact distances in a controlled space.
• Dynamic calibration, a road drive at a set speed on clearly marked roads while the system relearns.
• Both, for some vehicles.
