Windshield Chip: How Long Before It Spreads Into a Crack?

That little star in your windshield from a stone on the highway looks harmless enough. So how worried should you actually be? The honest answer: a chip can hold for weeks, or turn into a foot-long crack by tomorrow morning, and you don’t get to pick which. Here’s what decides it.

What actually makes a chip spread

A windshield is two layers of glass bonded around a plastic interlayer, under constant tension. A chip is a weak point in that tension, and a few everyday things push it over the edge:

• Temperature swings. This is the big one. A cold morning then a blast of the defroster, or a hot day then heavy A/C, makes the glass expand and contract, and the chip runs. Ontario’s swings between seasons (and within a single day) are prime crack weather.
• Vibration and bumps. Potholes, rough roads, even slamming the door can be enough once a chip is there.
